Matthei closes campaign in Puerto Montt and defends salmon industry

Presidential candidate of Chile Vamos, Evelyn Matthei, held her campaign closure in Puerto Montt, focusing on economy and security. She defended the salmon industry and praised Sebastián Piñera's government before dozens of supporters. She stated she would be 'tougher than hell' to restore security in the country.

Nine days before the presidential and parliamentary elections on November 16, 2025, Evelyn Matthei, standard-bearer of Chile Vamos, Amarillos, and Demócratas, arrived in Puerto Montt in the Los Lagos Region for a campaign closure event. The gathering took place in the Plaza de Armas around 8:15 p.m., with prior performance by the musical group 'Los Charros de Lumaco'.

Matthei took the microphone alongside Mayor Rodrigo Wainraihgt (RN), regional Governor Alejandro Santana, and Senator Iván Moreira. Before dozens of supporters with flags and banners, the former mayor of Providencia highlighted the importance of investing in the city, noting the need for more housing, a hospital, and schools. 'This opportunity to have a President, a governor, a great mayor, deputies, and senators gives us a unique chance to invest in Puerto Montt', she said. She hopes to secure 60% of the votes in the area.

In her speech lasting less than 10 minutes, similar to the one in Temuco the previous day, she emphasized security and economic growth. 'I may be a woman, I may be blonde, but I'm tougher than hell', she affirmed amid applause, promising not to allow illegal entries, murders in the city center, deaths on waiting lists, or the liquidation of the salmon industry by current authorities.

She also praised the late former President Sebastián Piñera: 'They're reminding me here who our President was when we were doing so well, Sebastián Piñera'. She added that Piñera 'is listening to us from above and must be very happy with the love and affection we all have for him'. Matthei criticized the current administration, stating that Chile has been 'very poorly managed'. This event is part of her regional tour to reinforce her message on economy and security before the vote.
