Delegate Minister for Relations with Parliament Laurent Panifous is organising a 15 July reception at the Hôtel de Clermont with members of the citizens’ convention on end-of-life issues.
The Economic, Social and Environmental Council invitation refers to a “celebration cocktail”, prompting immediate criticism. Republicans leader Bruno Retailleau posted on X: “Where is the dignity when one celebrates with champagne a law that concerns the suffering and death of the most vulnerable?”
LR deputy Philippe Juvin called for the event to be cancelled, saying “one does not celebrate a text that touches on death”. Deputy Hanane Mansouri also reacted by questioning the cost of the gathering.
The minister’s entourage clarified that the meeting is neither a cocktail nor a party but simply an exchange after the final vote expected in the National Assembly. Senate President Gérard Larcher announced he would refer the matter to the Constitutional Council if the government uses its last word to pass the text.
