National Police deploys 34,720 officers for safe Holy Week

Colombia's National Police announced the deployment of 34,720 officers nationwide under the ‘Semana Santa Segura’ strategy to ensure safety during Holy Week. The plan covers road checks, tourist site protection, environmental measures, and prevention of child exploitation. In Huila, a device with around 1,200 officers was activated.

Colombia's National Police launched the ‘Semana Santa Segura’ strategy, deploying 34,720 officers nationwide to safeguard coexistence and security amid high mobility. Preventive and control actions target tourist destinations, road axes, transport terminals, and religious venues.

For roads, the Transit and Transport Directorate will assign over 4,200 officers and 140 checkpoints, focusing on 20 high-accident segments under the ‘No más excusas en la vía’ campaign.

Tourism police, numbering 1,712, will escort visitors at beaches, rivers, and resorts, checking informal operators and hotels. The Carabinieri and Environmental Protection Directorate will ramp up controls against illegal wildlife and flora trafficking, such as birds, turtles, iguanas, and wax palm.

Child commercial exploitation will be prevented in high-traffic areas, in coordination with the Prosecutor's Office and other entities.

In Huila department, under ‘Huila Más Seguro’, around 1,200 officers will be deployed, 210 in Neiva, expecting 90,000 vehicles and 360,000 people. Colonel Javier Alberto Duarte Reyes, Huila Police Department commander, stated: “Our commitment is to ensure a safe, peaceful Holy Week with coexistence for all Huilans and visitors.” Colonel Héctor Jairo Betancourt Rojas, Neiva Metropolitan Police commander, added: “Our goal is for locals and visitors to enjoy a safe Holy Week.”

The Police will coordinate with local authorities to prioritize life protection across the territory.
