President Gustavo Petro announced the liquidation of energy company Air-e to integrate its assets into a new public regional company. The measure aims to guarantee continuity of electricity service for 1.3 million users in Atlántico, Magdalena and La Guajira.
Petro made the announcement through his X account on June 13, 2026. He explained that the decision is part of a plan to resolve the crisis in the electricity system in the Caribbean region, where proposals for socialization of losses have been blocked in Congress.
The company maintains a debt of 2.5 trillion pesos with generators and transmitters. Petro mentioned that the assets will be integrated with another public company and that the Colombia Solar program, with a budget of 8 trillion pesos, will be extended throughout the region.
Veeduría Ciudadana and the National Association of Generating Companies described the announcement as irresponsible and illegal. They warned that it lacks legal basis and could affect service provision without a defined replacement operator.
