Republic Pictures has acquired the documentary Mighty Mary, narrated by Hugh Jackman and Elizabeth Banks. Directed by Mary Mazzio, the film chronicles the first all-women’s sailing team to compete for the America’s Cup.
The documentary will premiere at the Nantucket Film Festival on June 18, with several team members in attendance. It is scheduled for a theatrical rollout starting September 11 at AMC Theatres locations across multiple cities including New York, Los Angeles, Boston and Chicago.
Widely dismissed at the time as a publicity stunt, the team defied expectations and became legitimate contenders. The project was produced by Grant Hill, Allison Abner and Mazzio alongside Skydance Sports, with Jackman and Banks serving as executive producers.
Sejin Croninger, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Acquisitions at Paramount Pictures, said the film is both a breathtaking sports documentary and a testament to the women who refused to let the boundaries of their sport define them. Mary Mazzio described the athletes’ grit and resilience as a rousing call to girls and young women about what can be possible.
