Russia summoned Luxembourg's ambassador on Thursday to protest the exhumation of Andriy Melnyk's remains. The Ukrainian nationalist leader was reburied near Kyiv earlier this week. Moscow described the actions as disrespectful to victims of Nazi Germany.
Russia said it summoned the envoy to object to the removal of Melnyk's remains from Luxembourg. The remains were exhumed and then reburied with full state honours alongside his wife near Kyiv on Monday.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that Moscow viewed the reburial as a sign of disrespect toward the millions of victims of Nazi Germany.
Melnyk led Ukrainian nationalist efforts during World War Two and sided with Nazi Germany against the Soviet Union. The Russian protest highlights ongoing tensions over historical figures from that period.
