SA20 tournament thrives in fourth season with packed crowds

The SA20 cricket league has solidified its position as a leading franchise tournament in its fourth season, drawing full stadiums and showcasing emerging talents amid challenging weather.

The SA20 entered its fourth season on 26 December 2025, capitalizing on a rare gap in South Africa's cricket calendar without a home Test series for the first time since 1992. This festive timing boosted attendance, with 14 of the first 17 matches selling out and stadiums near capacity throughout the round-robin phase.

On the field, action has been brisk. The opener at Newlands saw Durban's Super Giants face MI Cape Town in a high-scoring clash totaling 449 runs, where MI Cape Town's Ryan Rickelton scored the season's first century. Despite MI Cape Town's struggles—finishing with the wooden spoon—Rickelton emerged as a standout. Other big names like Nicholas Pooran and Rashid Khan underdelivered, with Pooran managing 152 runs at an average of 16.89 and Khan taking six wickets at 35.67.

Young prospects shone too. Paarl Royals' 19-year-old fast bowler Nqobani Mokoena impressed with his pace and control after an initial adjustment period, earning trust from coach Trevor Penney and captain David Miller over more experienced players.

Off-field engagement has been equally vibrant. Sponsors like Betway offered a R2-million catch prize, Absa distributed over R1-million via spin-and-win, and Rain hosted games at venues, drawing even casual fans. The season featured three centuries and two hat-tricks.

Challenges persist: with only six teams, playoffs include four, allowing teams like Joburg Super Kings to advance despite multiple losses. Pre-set playoff venues frustrated some, as MI Cape Town misses their home final at Newlands on 25 January 2026. Rain disrupted play more than before, with Durban's Super Giants fielding in just seven of ten scheduled games. Still, the tournament's growth signals its rising global stature behind the IPL.
