Sal Stewart delivered six RBIs to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 10-2 victory over the New York Yankees on Saturday at Yankee Stadium. The rookie tied a personal best in a game that split the first two contests of their three-game series.
Stewart drove in runs in the third, fifth and eighth innings. He hit a two-run double in the third to give the Reds the lead, added a sacrifice fly in the fifth and finished with a three-run double in the eighth.
Reds starter Andrew Abbott allowed one run over five-plus innings and struck out six to improve to 5-2. The bullpen limited further damage after the Yankees loaded the bases in the fifth.
Manager Terry Francona praised Stewart's approach at the plate and credited teammates for getting on base ahead of him. Stewart, who is batting .252 with 14 homers this season, now has 11 RBIs in his last five games.
First baseman Spencer Steer added a three-run homer during the fifth-inning rally. The 22-year-old Stewart called the performance special with family and friends in attendance.
