Sinner, who dropped just two games in his second-round match against Dalibor Svrcina, added: "I tried to stay solid on the baseline but also a bit more aggressive in the second set. It was a tough start for me with a break down but I'm happy how I reacted."

Awaiting Sinner is 19-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca, who reached the fourth round for the first time at a Masters 1000 event. Fonseca saved two match points in his second-round win over Karen Khachanov and followed with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of 23rd-seeded Tommy Paul, showcasing powerful groundstrokes.

"We tennis players, we look to playing against top players so it's going to be a pleasure -- and hopefully I can get the win," Fonseca said.

In another key match, Germany's fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev overcame American Brandon Nakashima 7-6 (7/2), 5-7, 6-4. Zverev won the first-set tiebreaker dominantly but lost the second after Nakashima converted his fifth break point. No breaks occurred until the final game of the third set, where Zverev sealed the win. Nakashima fired 17 aces to Zverev's 15.

"He played a fantastic match today," Zverev said. "He served like I have never seen before... so I've got to give credit to him."

Zverev, improving to 6-0 lifetime against Nakashima, next faces Frances Tiafoe, who beat Flavio Cobolli 6-1, 6-2. Elsewhere, American Learner Tien upset eighth-seeded Ben Shelton 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 6-3, serving 15 aces despite Shelton's illness.
