The 2026 World Cup group stage ends this Saturday and sets several round of 16 matchups. Mexico's national team will face Ecuador in that round.
Several matches are already confirmed for the round of 16. The opening encounter will be between South Africa and Canada on Sunday, June 28. Other matchups include Brazil against Japan, Germany versus Paraguay, the Netherlands against Morocco and Argentina facing Cape Verde.
The new tournament format with 48 teams requires the eight best third-place teams to be determined at the end of the group stage. These teams are ranked by points, goal difference and other criteria to complete the 32 qualifiers.
The round of 16 will be played from June 28 to July 3. Each match is single-elimination and may require extra time or penalties in case of a tie.
