Meteorological spring has officially arrived in parts of Skåne, Blekinge, and Gotland after seven days with daily average temperatures above zero. Despite an unusually cold winter, the timing is normal. Temperatures are rising in the south with sunny weather expected.
On February 27, 2026, meteorological spring arrived in southern Sweden. According to SMHI and meteorologists, the daily average temperature has been above zero degrees for at least seven consecutive days in parts of Skåne, Utklippan in Blekinge, and Östergarnsholm on Gotland. The transition was marked at 7 PM on Friday, reports Aftonbladet.
SMHI meteorologist Emma Rosengren confirms: "The reports we've received from our measurement stations confirm that spring has now arrived in southern and western Skåne and Östergarnsholm on Gotland." Last year, spring came earlier, on February 24, according to Expressen.
The winter has been unusually long with persistent cold in January and February, says meteorologist Lasse Rydqvist at Klar. "In January and February, we've seen really persistent cold. That's not common."
On Friday, the first double-digit temperature of the year was recorded in Malmö at 10.7 degrees Celsius at lunchtime. In Lund, nearly 12 degrees were measured, while it is still double-digit minus degrees in northernmost Norrland.
Ahead, a high-pressure system is expected to bring sunny weather and temperatures above zero even in Norrland on Saturday. "Within the next few weeks, large parts of southern Sweden will also reach spring temperatures," says Rosengren. Rydqvist predicts a mild March but warns of possible cold later in the month or early April. According to Rosengren, the typical fluffy spring clouds will wait until April.
Even if the cold returns, it is still considered spring meteorologically.
