A magnitude 5.3 aftershock struck off the coast of Glan in Sarangani on Saturday morning, five days after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that hit Mindanao on June 8.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported that the aftershock occurred at 10:05 a.m. on Saturday with its epicenter 30 kilometers off the coast of Glan at a depth of 17 kilometers. It was tectonic in origin.
The Office of Civil Defense said 61 people have been reported dead from the June 8 quake as of Saturday morning, with 1,221 injured and 33 missing. Validation of the numbers is ongoing.
The Bureau of Fire Protection announced it will defer to the Office of Civil Defense for official death toll updates to avoid confusion after earlier differing reports.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development reported that 553,068 people from 401 barangays were affected, with over 8,865 homes totally destroyed. Humanitarian assistance has reached 84.26 million pesos.
