Students at Colégio Pedro 2º suspended after racism complaint

Colégio Pedro 2º in Rio de Janeiro suspended students suspected of racism against a 12-year-old peer, who was called monkey and faced insults related to his skin color. The victim's mother accuses the school of negligence, claiming staff knew about the issue but failed to notify the family. The institution states it is handling the case with utmost seriousness and has begun investigations.

The historic Colégio Pedro 2º, a federal public school in Rio de Janeiro, has suspended students involved in racist acts against a 12-year-old student. According to the boy's mother, her son was targeted with insults like 'monkey' and other remarks about his skin color, with the behavior shared by multiple students.

The family denounces negligence by the school. Staff at the Centro campus, one of the institution's 14, allegedly had prior knowledge of the incidents but did not inform the parents. The mother was invited to a meeting on Wednesday (17), where the principal claimed they learned of the case through media coverage, despite pedagogical bodies already being aware.

During the meeting, the principal offered psychological treatment, which was declined as the boy is already seen by a professional from the Child Welfare Council. The mother is considering legal actions against those responsible and stresses the need to address racism in schools: "Today it's happening to my son, tomorrow it will be another child. We need to do something to stop [racism] in the school environment".

In a statement, Colégio Pedro 2º says racism situations are handled with utmost seriousness and reaffirms its commitment to human rights and fighting discrimination. The Educational and Pedagogical Orientation Sector was approached to report the incident, immediately starting investigation procedures in line with institutional protocols. Involved families have been summoned for clarifications and hearings with pedagogical sectors and the campus direction.

Upon completing the probe, the school will impose appropriate disciplinary measures per the Student Code of Ethics, ensuring due process and accountability. The institution highlights ongoing pedagogical actions to combat racism, fostering respect and a welcoming environment.
