Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the December 16 fatal shooting of DJ Warras in Johannesburg's CBD, with the pair set to appear in court on December 24. The breakthrough comes amid probes into violence targeting the entertainment and private security sectors.
Following the murder of Warrick Stock, known as DJ Warras, who was shot by three assailants shortly after parking his vehicle on December 16, Gauteng police made arrests on December 22. The Serious and Violent Crime Investigations team detained two persons of interest after questioning, confirming charges of murder. Spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili stated they will appear in Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on December 24, with investigations continuing for possible further arrests.
National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola had pledged an arrest before December 23, a promise now fulfilled. Stock, involved in entertainment and private security, had secured a protection order a month earlier over a hijacked building in central Johannesburg.
Gauteng Provincial Government spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga credited police efforts and linked the killing to Stock's security work, urging public tips for a conviction. At a December 19 memorial, Stock's sister Nicole said: “This is not where his voice should’ve ended, this is where it should’ve been loudest... It was a gun in the hands of evil that stole my brother.” His funeral occurred on December 23.
The case ties into a wider scandal of alleged drug cartel infiltration of South Africa's justice system, police, and security firms—previously linked to killings of DJ Sumbody (2022) and DJ Vintos (2022), stemming from a stolen cocaine haul.
