UNAM presents first Fundación Ifigenia Martínez award

The National Autonomous University of Mexico presented the awards of the first edition of the Fundación Ifigenia Martínez Prize to outstanding researchers, teachers and students in income distribution and economic development.

A few days ago rector Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas, Faculty of Economics director Lorena Rodríguez León and Dionisio Meade presided over the ceremony. The prize recognizes works on the contributions of Ifigenia Martínez, who graduated from the National School of Economics at UNAM in 1946 and earned a master’s degree from Harvard in 1949.

Martínez was the first director of the Faculty of Economics and specialized in fiscal and public policies. The awarded works addressed topics such as tax progressivity, income redistribution and female labor insertion.

In a later ceremony diplomas were awarded to the 350 members of the 2022-2026 graduating class of the Faculty of Economics. Officials highlighted the commitment to encourage new generations based on the equity values that guided Martínez’s career.
