A high-quality bootleg of Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' appeared on X over the weekend and quickly gained millions of views. Universal Pictures responded with immediate takedown measures. The studio confirmed it will pursue remedies to protect its copyright.
The leak surfaced on July 25 when a now-suspended account posted the film. A viral tweet at 2:25 p.m. PT amplified the post, which reached more than 2.1 million views within hours before replacement by a takedown notice.
Universal released a statement saying it had become aware of the unauthorized posting and initiated takedown protocols. The studio added that it takes copyright infringement seriously and will pursue all appropriate remedies.
By Sunday morning most copies had been removed from the platform. Some users countered the leak by posting Rickrolls instead of the film.
The incident did not appear to affect box office results. 'The Odyssey' earned $87 million in its second weekend, a record for Nolan, and has passed $600 million globally.
