The first half ended 0-0, with Deportes La Serena holding 59% possession and creating the best chances. Ignacio Vásquez had U's only clear opportunity in the 15th minute, deflected by goalkeeper Franco Lanzillotta. Tension arose when Yahir Salazar was initially sent off for a foul on Fabián Hormazábal, downgraded to yellow after VAR review. Lucas Romero was yellow-carded for U.
