Universidad de Chile beat Deportes La Serena 4-0 at Estadio Nacional in the Liga de Primera, marking Fernando Gago's winning debut as coach. The blues struggled in a first half dominated by the visitors but overwhelmed in the second with four goals. It is the U's first home win at the Nacional in 2026.
Universidad de Chile faced Deportes La Serena on Sunday, April 5, at Estadio Nacional for Matchday 8 of the Liga de Primera. It was Fernando Gago's debut in the national tournament, after taking over on March 20 as Francisco Meneghini's replacement. Before the match, U sat ninth with 10 points and La Serena 11th with 9.
The first half ended 0-0, with Deportes La Serena holding 59% possession and creating the best chances. Ignacio Vásquez had U's only clear opportunity in the 15th minute, deflected by goalkeeper Franco Lanzillotta. Tension arose when Yahir Salazar was initially sent off for a foul on Fabián Hormazábal, downgraded to yellow after VAR review. Lucas Romero was yellow-carded for U.
At halftime, Gago subbed Romero for Lucas Barrera. U transformed in the second half: Hormazábal scored in the 50th with a deflected shot, Guerrero headed the 2-0 in the 55th from Israel Poblete's cross, Altamirano made it 3-0 in the 68th with his left foot, and Agustín Arce sealed 4-0 in the 90+3rd assisted by Lucas Assadi, who returned from injury. Attendance was 23,694.
The win gives Universidad de Chile 13 points and their first home victory at Estadio Nacional in 2026, after no wins there in Liga, Copa de la Liga, or Sudamericana.
