The New York Yankees have recalled right-hander Elmer Rodríguez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start Sunday against the Reds in place of Gerrit Cole.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced the move after Saturday’s 10-2 loss to the Reds. Cole is now scheduled to pitch Monday at Detroit as the club manages a stretch of 16 consecutive games.
Rodríguez, the team’s No. 2 prospect, will make his fourth Major League start. Right-handed reliever Jake Bird was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.
Catcher Austin Wells is expected to rejoin the team on Sunday from the 10-day injured list. Catcher J.C. Escarra was optioned to Triple-A after Saturday’s game to clear space for Wells.
