New York Yankees pitching prospect Carlos Lagrange was placed on the Triple-A injured list Thursday with a shoulder injury. He will undergo an MRI, though no diagnosis or return timetable has been provided.
Lagrange, 23, had been transitioned to a relief role last month to prepare for a potential major league call-up. In his most recent Triple-A outing Sunday he allowed five runs while recording just two outs.
Shelley Duncan, manager of the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate, said the team is being protective. "With a guy like Lagrange, anything pops up, you're protective of the guy," he told Pinstripe Alley. "I don't know the details, the little ones. But it's nothing alarming."
The injury adds to New York's challenges. The team is on a seven-game losing streak and sits at 48-38, while several regulars including Max Fried, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton remain sidelined.
The Yankees and first-place Tampa Bay Rays are scheduled to open a four-game series Monday at Tropicana Field.
