Four participants in the Sarjana Penggerak Pembangunan Indonesia program died during basic military training. The Ministry of Defense and the Presidential Chief of Staff said evaluations and investigations are underway.
The death toll has risen to four people. They are Novia Rahmadhani Sihotang, Anisa Muyassaroh, Yonanda Muhammad Taufiq, and Muhammad Rifki Renaldi Gunawan. Rifki died on 26 June 2026 at 00:28 WIB after experiencing shortness of breath and receiving ICU care.
Head of Defense Information Bureau Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait said Rifki had undergone a health examination before the training. The Ministry of Defense expressed condolences and provided assistance to the victims' families.
Presidential Chief of Staff Dudung Abdurachman stated the training was not considered too strenuous. He said health tests had been conducted beforehand and no negligence had been found. Dudung also conveyed condolences for the previous three victims.
The government continues to evaluate the implementation of the SPPI program to consider safety factors.
