Georgia man sentenced to life for girlfriend's beating death

Mamadi Tambajang has been convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison with parole possible after 50 years for beating his girlfriend Amber Kelly to death in their Sandy Springs apartment. The 31-year-old Kelly suffered more than 25 blunt force injuries. Tambajang turned himself in to police days after the attack.

On May 15, 2024, Mamadi Tambajang walked into the Sandy Springs Police Department in Georgia, stating he wanted to turn himself in for harming his girlfriend and requesting a welfare check at their apartment. Officers discovered 31-year-old Amber Kelly beaten to death inside, with over 25 blunt force trauma injuries to her body. Tambajang was convicted of murder and received a life sentence, with the possibility of parole after 50 years, according to Sandy Springs police and prosecutors from Fulton County. The attack occurred a day or two earlier; Tambajang reportedly drove to his mother's home in South Carolina before returning to express concern for Kelly's well-being. Fulton County Deputy District Attorney Asia Baysah described the crime scene as horrific, saying, 'He knew she wasn't OK. She had over 25 different blunt force traumas to her body.' Prosecutors noted Tambajang had two prior domestic violence cases involving Kelly, including an incident about a year before her death when she told dispatchers, 'He's a violent person, and he threatened to murder me twice this week.' Kelly's family had urged her to leave the relationship, believing he could change, but the abuse escalated. Tambajang claimed he simply 'snapped' after being provoked, according to Fulton County Assistant District Attorney Jazmin Dilligard, who added, 'It was fake. If he was truly concerned about her, he would have called 911. He did everything but seek medical treatment.' Kelly's mother, Sharon Henderson, recalled learning of her daughter's death: 'I felt like my heart stopped beating the moment I found out that my baby was no longer here with us.'
