A former middle school teacher from Indianapolis was sentenced on Friday to 15 years in prison for beating his wife to death with a hammer last year.
Terry Ogle, 79, was convicted last month of voluntary manslaughter after a multiday bench trial in Marion County. He had originally faced a murder charge for the death of his 76-year-old wife, Mary Ogle.
The killing took place on Jan. 17, 2025, at the couple's home. Ogle called 911 and told the dispatcher, "I did it," adding that his wife had "been down for a while" and that it was "too late" for CPR. He also texted his daughter to say he was going to jail.
Police found Mary Ogle dead at the scene with a head injury. Ogle had a self-inflicted wound to his wrist and was treated at a hospital. During interviews, he claimed his wife had been having an affair.
Both Ogle and his wife had worked in education, according to local reports.
