Kenya's Interior Ministry has ordered the immediate release of 188 impounded motorbikes in Kilifi County, enabling boda boda operators to resume their livelihoods. The move addresses complaints over prolonged impoundments for minor traffic offences and follows a presidential directive. Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo announced it during a meeting with sector leaders.
The Interior Ministry has directed the immediate release of 188 motorbikes held at various police stations in Kilifi County. These were impounded over minor traffic offences, following complaints from operators about extended detention periods.
Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Raymond Omollo, stated the decision aligns with an earlier directive from President William Ruto to support the informal transport sector. The announcement came during a high-level meeting with boda boda leaders from Kilifi and neighbouring counties, as well as security agencies.
“We have agreed with security agencies that all motorbikes detained on account of petty offences be released without delay,” Omollo stated, adding that a full compliance report must be submitted by Monday.
Omollo cautioned against generalising all operators as criminals, noting only a small group is responsible. He urged riders to collaborate with National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO) and security teams to identify rogue elements.
The government emphasised strict adherence to road safety rules, including proper licensing, training, and insurance. It also announced plans to enhance boda boda SACCOs through better financing access and promoted a shift to electric motorcycles.
