The National Assembly passed the confirmation motion for Prime Minister nominee Han Seong-sook on Tuesday. Out of 167 lawmakers present, 166 voted in favor and one ballot was invalid. The ruling Democratic Party endorsed the motion with support from the Rebuilding Korea Party and the Progressive Party.
Lawmakers from the main opposition People Power Party boycotted the vote, calling her unfit for the position. Earlier on Tuesday, a parliamentary committee adopted the confirmation hearing report in a meeting also boycotted by the opposition.
Han is set to take office as the country's 50th prime minister and the second for President Lee Jae Myung, 23 days after her nomination on June 7. She will become the second woman to serve as prime minister, 20 years after Han Myeong-sook in 2006. Han previously served as chief executive of Naver and as Lee's first minister of small and medium-sized enterprises.
