The National Union of Mineworkers has condemned alleged threats made against its branch chairperson at the Impala Platinum mine in Rustenburg, North West. The union says the incident occurred amid industrial action and a dispute over organisational rights.
Three men have been arrested and appeared in the Tlhabane Magistrate’s Court in Rustenburg. They were reportedly caught with two unlicensed firearms and a stolen vehicle while allegedly stalking the chairperson.
NUM spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu stated that the threats represent an attack on workers’ democratic rights. He said the union will continue to pursue recognition at Impala Shaft Number 1.
Mammburu called on employers and rival unions to promote peaceful coexistence and respect for workers’ choices. The union maintains that workers have the right to choose a trade union without fear or intimidation.
