Pension lawyer warns IMF reform harms retirees

Florencia Markarián analyzed the Argentina-IMF agreement on the pension system. The specialist questioned that the reform differentiates benefits according to the origin of contributions and considered that it does not improve the situation of those who contributed the most.

Pension lawyer Florencia Markarián explained that the reform included in the agreement with the International Monetary Fund proposes to differentiate pensions obtained with contributions from those reached through moratoria or the Universal Pension for Older Adults.

Markarián detailed that the plan sets a minimum benefit equivalent to 20% of RIPTE, which is around 367,000 pesos. Those with more years of contributions would receive a proportional benefit, and a person with 45 years of contributions could reach 65% of RIPTE, close to 1.2 million pesos.

The specialist noted that this amount remains insufficient against the cost of living. "Earning one million one hundred in an Argentina with a basic basket for a retiree above one million eight hundred harms retirees," she stated.

Markarián recalled that more than five million people receive the minimum pension or PUAM and that the 70,000-peso bonus remains frozen. She also anticipated that the debate on the gradual increase in the retirement age is coming.
