A serious accident on BR-101 at the Bahia-Espírito Santo border resulted in 11 deaths on Saturday (December 27), including at least three children. The head-on collision between a Fiat Doblò and a Chevrolet S10 caused the vehicles to catch fire, carbonizing the bodies. The 11th victim, a girl named Maria Alice, died after being rescued and treated at a health unit.
The accident occurred around 8:50 a.m. at kilometer 953 of BR-101, near Mucuri in the far south of Bahia, on the border with Espírito Santo. According to the Federal Highway Police (PRF), a head-on collision between two passenger vehicles led to a fire that hindered victim identification. A Fiat Doblò with eight occupants heading to Vitória (ES) reportedly invaded the oncoming lane, crashing into a Chevrolet S10 carrying three people toward Teixeira de Freitas (BA). The road has a single lane with two directions.
The Ecovias Capixaba concession confirmed that 10 people died at the scene and one passed away after hospital treatment. "In total, 11 fatal victims were confirmed, with 10 dying at the scene and one dying after receiving hospital care," the company stated. Among the victims, there are at least three children, including Maria Alice, who was thrown from the vehicle and rescued but did not survive her injuries. Initial PRF information points to an overtaking attempt as a possible cause.
The impact carbonized the bodies, complicating the work of the Scientific Police and the Medical Legal Institute (IML). Teams from the PRF, Samu, and the Technical Police Department (DPT) responded at the scene. The road was fully blocked and released around 1:30 p.m. The Fiat Doblò has a maximum capacity of seven passengers, according to the manufacturer, raising questions about overcrowding. The identities of the other victims have not yet been released by the Scientific Police.
