The St. Louis Cardinals delivered a dominant performance Friday afternoon, defeating the Chicago Cubs 17-1 in a wire-to-wire victory at Wrigley Field.
St. Louis scored early and often, erupting for 17 runs while chasing Cubs starter David Peterson before the fourth inning. Thirteen of those runs came with two outs, including a three-run homer by rookie Nathan Church in the second inning.
The Cardinals added three runs in the third and four more in the fourth on a two-run single by Alec Burleson and a three-run homer by Masyn Winn. Additional two-out production came from Burleson, Iván Herrera and Bryan Torres.
Andre Pallante earned his 10th win of the season, allowing five hits over 5 2/3 scoreless innings. The 13 two-out RBIs marked the most by the franchise in a game since 1961.
