The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Kansas City Royals 12-10 on Sunday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium. JJ Wetherholt hit two home runs to lead the offensive outburst. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Cardinals.
St. Louis scored five runs in the first inning and four in the second to build a big early lead. Wetherholt opened the game with a leadoff home run and added a two-run shot in the second inning. He finished 3-for-5 and now has 12 home runs on the season with a .268 batting average.
Iván Herrera added a three-run homer in the fifth inning to help maintain the advantage. Manager Oliver Marmol praised Wetherholt's approach at the plate. "Two homers today, and the at-bats he is taking are super professional," Marmol said.
The Royals scored 30 runs across the three-game series and mounted a late rally in the ninth. Closer Riley O’Brien struck out the final two batters to secure the victory. Jordan Walker made a highlight-reel catch at the right-field wall to rob Salvador Perez of a potential home run.
