Civilization 7 to make single civilization playthrough optional in may update

Firaxis Games will release the Test of Time update for Civilization 7 on May 19, allowing players to stick with one civilization for an entire campaign. The change addresses one of the game's most controversial mechanics introduced at launch in February 2025.

The free update introduces the Syncretism mechanic, which lets players adopt unique units or infrastructure from other civilizations during their chosen civilization's Apex Age. Players can also choose to double down on their selected civilization's strengths with Affirmation bonuses. Age Transitions remain in place, preserving the option to switch civilizations while retaining the same leader throughout a match.
