Councilor seeks ineligibility ruling for Regina Nunes

Councilor Amanda Paschoal (PSOL) filed a representation Friday with the São Paulo regional electoral prosecutor's office seeking an eight-year ineligibility ruling against Regina Nunes.

Paschoal alleges that Regina Nunes, the first lady and MDB pre-candidate for state deputy, gained an unfair advantage through the use of a public servant. Breno de Souza Santos, assigned to the Municipal Secretariat of Human Rights, received R$ 5,637 monthly and produced videos for the first lady's social media during business hours.

Records show the employee accompanied Regina Nunes on pre-campaign events since February. His dismissal was published in the Official Gazette on Wednesday, one day after Folha questioned the city hall.

The municipal administration denied that Breno provided services to the first lady and stated he performed his duties. Paschoal requests a fine, an ineligibility declaration and referral of the case to the Public Prosecutor's Office for investigation of administrative improbity.

Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE) formed a majority on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, to condemn Rio de Janeiro's former governor Cláudio Castro (PL) for political and economic power abuse in the 2022 elections, barring him from office until 2030. The 4-1 vote jeopardizes his Senate pre-candidacy.

Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE) must rule if Cláudio Castro's resignation was a maneuver to dodge cassation and indirect election in the state assembly. Former deputy Marcelo Freixo and a coalition appealed to annul the ex-governor's diploma. This could lead to a direct popular vote for his successor in Rio de Janeiro.

São Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) issued a decree on March 13 reallocating R$51.9 million from the 2026 budget, cutting bus subsidies and elderly programs to fund road works and Autódromo de Interlagos upgrades. The PT opposition criticizes the freezes, while city hall downplays the effect. Councilors demanded explanations from the Sports Secretariat.

Former federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro confirmed on Tuesday, May 5, that he will be the running mate for André do Prado in the São Paulo Senate race. The move aims to bolster the right-wing in the state and revive Eduardo's political career while he remains self-exiled in the US. However, his cassation for absences from the Chamber raises questions about his eligibility.

The PT's Rio de Janeiro state directory unanimously approved support on Saturday (18) for Eduardo Paes (PSD)'s candidacy for state governor and Benedita da Silva (PT) for Senate. The move aims to bolster President Lula's campaign platform in the state, where he lost in 2022. The alliance comes amid a political vacancy in the Rio state government.

In the latest development on Rio de Janeiro's anticipated indirect election for an interim governorship, STF Justice Luiz Fux suspended on March 18 parts of a new law passed by the Legislative Assembly (Alerj). The ruling, responding to a PSD challenge, addresses rules for the vote triggered by Governor Cláudio Castro's (PL) potential resignation to run for Senate, citing unconstitutionality due to state violence and tight deadlines.
