Deputy Hajj minister urges MUI fatwa to ban Hajj using corruption money

Deputy Minister of Hajj and Umrah Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak has urged the Indonesian Ulema Council to issue a firm fatwa on performing Hajj in a halal manner. He stressed that using corruption proceeds for Hajj is forbidden and needs constant reminders. The statement was made at the Pondok Gede Hajj Hostel in East Jakarta on January 26, 2026.

Deputy Minister of Hajj and Umrah (Wamenhaj) Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak has called on the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) to issue a firm fatwa regarding the halal and proper procedures for performing Hajj. The statement was delivered at the Pondok Gede Hajj Hostel in East Jakarta on Monday, January 26, 2026.

According to Dahnil, the fatwa is essential to affirm the obligation for Muslims to undertake Hajj in a commendable manner. "Hajj must be performed in a hasanah way. If using money from corruption or illicit funds, it is haram. This needs to be constantly reminded," he said.

He also reminded the public to follow official Hajj procedures, amid the rising cases of illegal Hajj using non-Hajj visas or pilgrimage visas. Such practices are considered haram and detrimental to pilgrims as they violate Saudi Arabian regulations. "Official Hajj visas are issued formally, while there are also non-Hajj visas. So, performing Hajj illegally is haram. We hope for such guidance for all Muslims in Indonesia," Dahnil stated.

Furthermore, the MUI fatwa is expected to strengthen Hajj fiqh guidelines relevant to the current conditions of pilgrims. Dahnil views Hajj registration as part of the intention to perform Hajj, even if the prospective pilgrim passes away or fails to meet the istitha’ah requirements. "We hope for a fiqh study from MUI so that Hajj registration is categorized as the intention to fulfill Hajj, even if there are obstacles like death or lack of istitha’ah at departure time," he added.

This initiative aims to provide clear guidance for Indonesian Muslims in carrying out Hajj in accordance with Sharia principles.
