Egypt’s Agricultural Research Centre ranks second in 2025 regional Scimago table

Egypt’s Agricultural Research Centre has secured second place in the Middle East and North Africa in the 2025 Scimago regional rankings for research centres, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation. The announcement came during a scientific event organised by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in collaboration with Elsevier and the Arab Federation for Research Councils. The ranking highlights the centre’s growing research performance and its role in achieving food security.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation announced on Wednesday that Egypt’s Agricultural Research Centre has achieved second place in the 2025 regional Scimago rankings for research centres in the Middle East and North Africa. This fourth edition covers research institutions from 22 Arab countries and is based on a composite indicator evaluating research performance, innovation using Scopus data, and societal impact.

Alaa Farouk, the Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, stated that the accomplishment reflects the centre’s “increasing research performance,” crediting unlimited support from political leadership for the agricultural research system. He emphasised the sector’s top priority status due to its vital role in food security. Farouk described the ranking as “international testimony to the efficiency of the Egyptian researcher” and their ability to deliver practical solutions for food security and climate change challenges. He noted that it would enhance opportunities for cooperation with international and financing institutions and foster partnerships with global universities.

Adel Abdel Azim, President of the Agricultural Research Centre, attributed the advancement to “diligent work” by scientists across various research institutes and laboratories. He explained that the centre’s current strategy aims to transform scientific research into “tangible reality” to support sustainable development goals.

The Scimago classification serves as a strategic tool to assess research quality, innovation, and scientific outputs, encouraging competition among institutions to boost performance. It provides a competitive edge by enhancing international reputation, attracting talent, and securing more funding.
