Four killed in bakkie crash on N2 in KZN

Four people died in a collision involving four bakkies on the N2 highway at Kwambonami in KwaZulu-Natal. The accident occurred when one vehicle attempted to overtake on a double barrier line, leading to a head-on crash. Two others were critically injured and hospitalized.

A tragic accident on the N2 highway near Kwambonami on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast claimed four lives on December 19, 2025. The crash involved four bakkies and happened when one driver, traveling southbound, attempted to overtake another vehicle on a double barrier line. This maneuver resulted in a head-on collision with oncoming traffic.

RTI spokesperson Sindi Msimang provided details on the incident. "Four people lost their lives on scene and two were taken to hospital and are in a critical condition," she stated. She further explained: "It is alleged that one of the bakkies was traveling on the southbound lane, overtook on a double barrier line and collided with the vehicles that were traveling on the opposite direction. The scene is still active. The traffic officers have opened the shoulder lane to traffic. They are also using stop-and-go procedure."

The road was initially closed to clear the scene, but authorities have since implemented a stop-and-go system and opened the shoulder lane to manage traffic flow. This incident comes amid rising concerns from the KZN traffic authority about dangerous driving behaviors as holiday traffic increases ahead of Christmas. Issues such as speeding, road rage, overtaking on yellow lines, and drunken driving have been highlighted as major risks.

Motorists in the region are being urged to adhere strictly to road rules to prevent further tragedies.
