Representatives from Mexico's gas and gasoline sectors accused the Agency for Safety, Energy and Environment (ASEA) of increasing verification visits and closures at service stations and gas outlets in recent weeks, despite the RENAGAS regularization program.
Representatives from the gas and gasoline sectors denounced that ASEA, now led by Andrea González Hernández, has ramped up verification visits and closures in recent weeks. This comes despite the National Registry of Gasoline and LP Gas Installations (RENAGAS) promising to avoid immediate shutdowns for facilities in the regularization process, except in cases of imminent safety or environmental risks.
RENAGAS, launched under Armando Ocampo's tenure, achieved over 90% participation. The representatives claimed, however, that since González Hernández took over, ASEA—backed by Verifications Director Rodulfo de la Fuente Pérez—has conducted arbitrary inspections.
The complaint was filed anonymously due to fears of reprisals. They also pointed to delays in processing permits and procedures by the authority as a key barrier to compliance.
ASEA has not publicly addressed changes to supervision criteria or detailed the number of closures in this period. The sector reaffirmed its commitment to meet regulations and proceed with regularization.
