Jaley Bush received a five-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to child endangerment and involuntary manslaughter in the death of her infant son.
Bush, 28, was visiting a friend in Keokuk, Iowa, on January 27 when she and her son fell asleep on a bed in the basement. She awoke to find the child head first and unresponsive inside a trash can next to the bed.
Officers responded around 2 p.m. and attempted lifesaving measures. Bush appeared under the influence of narcotics at the scene. She later tested positive for methamphetamine and benzodiazepines.
The baby was pronounced dead on February 5. The cause of death was ruled asphyxia. Bush will serve her sentence at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women.
