Jair Renan has low-profile performance after one year in Balneário Camboriú council

Jair Renan, youngest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, marked one year as a councilor in Balneário Camboriú, Santa Catarina, attending 90% of sessions but rarely engaging in debates. His speeches echoed bolsonarista rhetoric, including opposition to child vaccination mandates and support for national symbols. Clashes arose with peers over democracy and military dictatorship issues.

Jair Renan (PL) began his term on the Balneário Camboriú City Council in January 2025 and, over the year, attended about 90% of the 93 sessions held. However, his plenary appearances were infrequent, with limited interactions during debates and rare use of the microphone. Absences clustered in November 2025, when his father was arrested in Brasília.

When he spoke, Renan drew on phrases familiar to the former president, addressing bolsonarista themes. In March 2025, he defended his brother Eduardo Bolsonaro in a speech under three minutes: "If you think you're going to silence me, you're very mistaken. I'm going to keep bothering the Balneário Camboriú system, okay? And the snake is going to smoke now". Among his initiatives, he proposed penalties for vandalism against national, state, and municipal flags, and sought to amend a school program to include the national anthem weekly, rather than monthly.

He also added an amendment to a city hall bill requiring explicit parental consent for child vaccinations in schools. His office justified: "It is essential that the State act with respect for the rights of parents and legal guardians, ensuring their decision-making power over the health of their minor children". This stance echoes his father's position during the Covid-19 pandemic, when he discouraged immunization.

Renan secured the highest vote in 2024 due to his surname, in a city where 75% of voters backed Bolsonaro in 2022. Still, the PL lost the mayoral race to Juliana Pavan (PSD), a right-wing figure. He opposed an IPTU tax hike but supported measures like regulating involuntary commitments for substance addicts.

His requests to city hall emphasized urban maintenance, such as sidewalk repairs and increased municipal guard patrols against homeless individuals. Tensions marked relations with colleagues: in June 2025, he was the sole vote against the Municipal Day of Democracy, proposed by PT's Eduardo Zanatta, honoring Higino João Pio, an elected mayor killed by the 1969 military dictatorship. Renan stated: "The truth is on our side, not with the Truth Commission created by Dilma Rousseff", criticizing protests against amnesty for those involved in the January 8, 2023, riots. Earlier, he opposed correcting council minutes on Pio's death, whose official suicide ruling was debunked in 2014 by truth commissions.

A Genial/Quaest poll released on Sunday shows that 49% of voters believe Senator Flávio Bolsonaro will take his pre-candidacy for the presidency to the end. Belief is higher among Bolsonaro supporters, while Lula voters see the announcement as a negotiation tactic. The move comes amid family maneuvers that centrão politicians interpret as signs of potential withdrawals.

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro stated he will only withdraw his pre-candidacy for the 2026 presidency if former President Jair Bolsonaro is released and can run in the elections. In an interview with Record, he described the 'price' as justice for his father and supporters, while praising the positive reaction from Governor Tarcísio de Freitas to the news. A Centrão faction voices concern over Flávio Bolsonaro's 2026 presidential pre-candidacy, fearing a right-wing split could boost outsiders like Pablo Marçal and aid Lula's re-election. Group leaders reject a Bolsonaro son as running mate on a ticket with Tarcísio de Freitas, though a dissidence proposes accommodation to prevent division. Michelle Bolsonaro, meanwhile, was furious at not being consulted on the candidacy launch.

PL president Valdemar Costa Neto stated at a dinner with entrepreneurs in Faria Lima, São Paulo, on the night of February 23, 2026, that there is no room for a third way in the 2026 presidential elections, predicting a second round between Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro.
