The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned residents in various parts of the country to prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall from today, March 27, to Tuesday, March 31. Heavy rains are expected in Central Kenya, Western regions, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and Northeastern Kenya, accompanied by thunderstorms and potential flooding.
The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD), also known as Kenya Met, issued an advisory on Friday, March 27, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall across several regions for the next five days, until Tuesday, March 31.
Heavy rains are forecast for Central Kenya, Western Kenya, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and Northeastern Kenya. Counties in the Western region, Rift Valley, and Lake Victoria Basin include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, and Trans Nzoia. Others are Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
In Central Kenya, counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi are expected to receive moderate rainfall. Most areas will see sunny and cloudy conditions in the morning, followed by afternoon showers. In Western Kenya, Rift Valley, and Lake Victoria Basin, downpours may be accompanied by thunderstorms, with residents warned of flooding risks.
Similar moderate rains are predicted for coastal counties including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, as well as Tana Delta. Southeastern lowlands, however, will remain sunny and dry.
Additionally, KMD warned of very cold nights in Central Kenya, with temperatures dropping to 7°C in Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi. Daytime temperatures above 30°C are expected along the Coast, Northeastern, and Northwestern Kenya.
Residents are advised to take precautions against weather-related hazards.
