Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi appointed Economic Freedom Fighters provincial leader Nkululeko Dunga as finance MEC on 1 April 2026. The decision aims to stabilise the coalition government and secure passage of the R179.2 billion budget amid threats from coalition partners. Dunga replaces ANC's Lebogang Maile, who shifts to education.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi announced the appointment of Nkululeko Dunga, the Economic Freedom Fighters' provincial leader, as the new Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for finance during a media briefing on 1 April 2026. Lesufi stated the move was intended to stabilise the province and respect coalition partners, following delays in adopting an adjustment budget due to disagreements.
"The possible instability was going to be the hallmark of this administration," Lesufi told journalists. He noted that the ANC's national leadership approved engaging other parties to strengthen the executive council. The EFF had threatened to block key motions in the Gauteng legislature, including the upcoming R179.2 billion budget, which could disrupt funding for schools, hospitals and services.
Dunga, previously dismissed as finance MMC in Ekurhuleni in June 2024, will oversee the province's larger budget. Lesufi defended the choice, saying, "We’re not throwing him in a lion’s den. It’s a space that he has been in." The reshuffle displaced former education MEC Matome Chiloane, with Lesufi expressing regret.
EFF spokesperson Sinawo Tambo called it a "progressive step" confirming their participation in the Government of Provincial Unity. ANC Gauteng Provincial Task Team spokesperson Mzi Khumalo welcomed the reconfiguration to build a stable government focused on service delivery.
Other changes include Vuyiswa Ramokgopa (Rise Mzansi) heading economic development and Faith Mazibuko (ANC) taking health. Lesufi confirmed ongoing talks with uMkhonto Wesizwe party amid similar budget support issues.
