The Maharashtra government is set to review its recent policy barring reserved category candidates who avail relaxations from competing for open category posts. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed the cabinet decision to the Advocate General for legal scrutiny after objections by Shiv Sena minister Sanjay Rathod. The review follows concerns over potential conflicts with Supreme Court rulings.
The state cabinet had approved the policy last week. It stated that reserved category candidates availing relaxations in age, educational qualifications, experience or number of attempts would be eligible only for reserved posts.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis acted on Tuesday after Sanjay Rathod highlighted several Supreme Court orders during the cabinet meeting. Rathod said the rulings were not in favour of the decision and urged reconsideration.
The General Administration Department noted the policy aimed to bring clarity amid 72 per cent reservation in government jobs. The state had cited a 1998 Union government notification and a December 2024 opinion from the then Advocate General to support the original move.
