Michael Kim carded a 12-under 59 in the second round of the 3M Open on Friday at TPC Twin Cities. The round gave the 33-year-old world No. 57 a two-shot lead at 14 under after 36 holes.
Kim made eight birdies and no bogeys, closing with four straight birdies. He drained a 24-footer on the par-5 18th to complete the score, the 16th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history.
The Californian started early and built momentum with five birdies in a row on holes 3 through 7. He added birdies on the back nine, including putts of 12, 14 and 17 feet on holes 15, 16 and 17.
“I kind of remember thinking on 18 that you have to go for it, 60 or 61 doesn’t really make too much of a difference,” Kim said after the round.
Kim ranked first in strokes gained approach and putting. He enters the weekend with 36 holes left and Scottie Scheffler still in the field.
