A new NBC News survey shows that fewer than three in 10 Democrats describe themselves as extremely or very proud to be American. Overall pride stands at 56 percent, with wide gaps by party and age. The results come ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026.

The poll, released on June 14, found that 90 percent of Republicans express strong national pride compared with 29 percent of Democrats. Among adults 65 and older, 75 percent report feeling proud, while the share falls to 36 percent for those aged 18 to 34.

A separate Cygnal survey released around the same time produced nearly identical topline numbers, with 58 percent overall saying they feel extremely or very proud. It also showed that 30 percent of Democrats say they are not at all proud.

Both polls indicate that a majority of Americans believe the country’s best days lie in the past. Analysts noted the findings reflect deepening polarization over national identity.
