President William Ruto has assured Nyamira residents of a Ksh 300 million SGR station in Ikonge. The confirmation addresses local concerns after initial plans omitted a station despite the rail passing through the area. He spoke during a development tour in Ikonge, Nyamira County, on April 13.
President William Ruto visited Ikonge in Nyamira County on April 13, 2026, during a development tour, where he confirmed the construction of a Ksh 300 million Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station.
"I am the one who pushed for the railway from Naivasha to pass through Ikonge, and here in Ikonge, I am building a Ksh 300 million railway station," President Ruto stated. "This station will help you transport people and goods. I want you to organise yourselves because all the produce you want to move to Nairobi will be done through the SGR, so you can tell the naysayers to relax."
The announcement follows concerns from Nyamira residents after initial reports showed that, although the SGR Phase 2B line from Naivasha to Kisumu passes through Ikonge, no station was planned. Original plans included six intermediate stations at Narok, Mulot, Bomet, Sotik, Sondu, and Ahero, along with 17 crossing stations across several counties.
Locals feared the absence of a station would hinder business, particularly transporting agricultural produce to areas like Nakuru, Narok, Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu. Nyamira leaders accompanying Ruto thanked him for allocating the station, noting it would boost the county's economy, known for its produce.
Additionally, Ruto pledged other projects, including tarmacking over 100 kilometres of roads, upgrading Nyamira referral hospital, building markets, hostels and affordable housing, Ksh 900 million for a stadium, and over Ksh 700 million for Nyamira University.
