Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi for a two-day visit, warmly welcomed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the airport. The leaders will discuss defense, trade, and energy cooperation during the 23rd India-Russia Summit. This marks Putin's first trip to India since the Russia-Ukraine war began.

Upon arriving at Palam Airport on Thursday evening, Prime Minister Modi broke protocol to welcome President Putin with a handshake and a hug. After a traditional dance performance, the leaders traveled together in one car to 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, where Modi hosted a dinner. Modi posted on social media, "Delighted to welcome my friend President Putin to India. The India-Russia friendship has stood the test of time and has benefitted our peoples greatly."

Modi gifted Putin a Russian translation of the Bhagavad Gita, symbolizing the cultural bonds between the two nations. This is Putin's first visit to India since 2021, though Modi met him in Moscow in 2024.

The second day's schedule includes: 11 AM Guard of Honor at Rashtrapati Bhavan, 11:30 AM tribute at Raj Ghat, 11:50 AM meeting with Modi, 1:50 PM joint press conference, 7 PM meeting with President Droupadi Murmu, and departure at 9 PM.

Discussions will focus on S-400 systems, Su-57 jets, nuclear energy, and oil supplies. In a recent interview, Putin stated, "Prime Minister Modi is a reliable person who does not bow to pressure. India is a major global player, not a British colony." The two countries conduct over 90% of transactions in national currencies. The visit will strengthen the India-Russia strategic partnership.
