From today, non-binary and trans people in Colombia can modify the 'sexo' field in their civil registry, identity card, and citizenship ID. The National Civil Registry Office incorporated the categories 'no binario' (NB) and 'trans' (T) in physical and digital formats. This change represents progress in guaranteeing rights for diverse gender identities.
The National Civil Registry Office announced the official incorporation of the categories 'no binario' (NB) and 'trans' (T) into Colombian identification documents. This adjustment, which applies to physical and digital formats, responds to a technical and legal process started in 2024, allowing modification of the 'sexo' field for those who do not identify as 'femenino' or 'masculino'.
National registrar Hernán Penagos led the announcement at an event in the Casa LGBTI Sebastián Romero in Bogotá, where the first digital IDs with the new categories were delivered. 'This advance is a significant step in guaranteeing rights for the population with diverse gender identities', the entity stated in its release.
To make the change, individuals must present a public deed requesting rectification of the 'sexo' component, which will update the civil registry and other documents. The implementation involved modifications to more than 80 computer modules, database updates, and adaptations to national identity verification systems.
This measure aims to recognize gender diversity and facilitate the official reflection of individual identities, contributing to more inclusive processes in Colombia.
