The case of Reni Rahmawati came to light after her family reported her missing in September 2025. According to an investigation by West Java Police's Criminal Investigation Directorate, Reni was recruited by two illegal Indonesian agents now designated as suspects. They promised a fictitious job in China with a Rp15 million monthly salary, but upon arrival in Guangzhou, Fujian Province, she was sold and officially married to a local man.
West Java Police collaborated with Immigration, the Indonesian Consulate General in Guangzhou, and Chinese police to rescue her. The process involved handling her legal divorce before repatriation. West Java Police Chief Irjen Pol Rudi Setiawan stated, "The victim was promised a job with a Rp15 million monthly salary. However, upon arriving in China, the victim was married. We are investigating if there are other victims." He confirmed two suspects have been detained, while another remains at large.
Upon arriving at West Java Police Headquarters on Tuesday (November 18, 2025), an emotional reunion unfolded with her family. Reni expressed gratitude, "There was no harassment or physical violence there. I'm thankful to be back." KJRI Guangzhou representative Indah Megawati emphasized intensive coordination with local authorities for the repatriation.
Police Chief Rudi Setiawan urged the public to be cautious of high-salary job offers via social media and to report any missing relatives immediately. The Foreign Ministry supported these efforts to prevent similar cases.
