RoadOne expands Tesla partnership with electric semi-truck

RoadOne IntermodaLogistics has purchased its first fully electric Tesla semi-truck as part of an expanded partnership with the electric vehicle maker. The company plans to acquire up to ten such trucks for its Oakland, California, operations. This move underscores RoadOne's commitment to sustainable logistics.

RoadOne IntermodaLogistics, based in Randolph, Massachusetts, announced the addition of a fully electric Tesla semi-truck to its fleet, marking a significant step in its long-term collaboration with Tesla. The purchase is the first of potentially ten vehicles aimed at the Oakland, California, market, enhancing the company's environmentally responsible logistics offerings.

Eric Weakley, senior vice president of operations at RoadOne, expressed enthusiasm about the development: “We are thrilled to welcome the first of what could be up to ten fully-electric semi-trucks into our fleet. This investment reflects our commitment to efficient, environmentally responsible logistics solutions. By offering a sustainable, low-emissions option we’re not only strengthening our service, but also contributing to a cleaner and more resilient supply chain.”

The Tesla semi-truck boasts impressive performance metrics, accelerating to 60 mph in 20 seconds, with a range of up to 500 miles. In RoadOne's operations, it has achieved efficiency of 1.9 kWh per mile while carrying payloads averaging 38,000 lbs. The vehicle has been in full operation for several months, and RoadOne reports high satisfaction with its capabilities.

The partnership traces back to 2012, when RoadOne began delivering containers of aluminum coils, which were transloaded and shipped to Tesla's stamping facility in Fremont, California. By 2014, RoadOne had implemented a just-in-time delivery program, including onsite storage of substantial inventories of aluminum and steel coils. Today, the company supports Tesla's manufacturing by transporting coils, batteries, and other components from its Oakland warehouse to the Fremont plant across multiple daily shifts.

This integration highlights a deep operational synergy and mutual dedication to efficient production. RoadOne emphasized its role in sustainability: “RoadOne IntermodaLogistics is dedicated to fully supporting the evolving logistics demands of clients by delivering efficient, reliable, high-performing supply chain solutions.”
