Ruth Garbus releases new single ahead of Profound album

Singer-songwriter Ruth Garbus unveiled her new single “I Think I’m Ready Now” on April 20, previewing her upcoming album Profound. The full LP arrives June 12 via Orindal Records. It follows her 2023 release Alive People.

Garbus’ new album Profound features contributions from Elie McAfee-Hahn on keyboards and Nick Bisceglia on guitar. Recorded at King Tuff’s home studio in Vermont, the record includes Garbus’ translations of two Gabriel Fauré compositions: “Clair de Lune” and “Nocturne.” These draw from her training at the Brattleboro Music Center with School of Song and Junko Watanabe. The tracks reflect influences from her time there. Garbus described the lead single in a press release: “ ‘I Think I’m Ready Now’ is a song about being a ripe fruit. I guess. I mean, I wrote it in the same way I write most of my songs, except I was cackling at my audacity a little more than usual. It has a tension, partly because it feels important to me—I don’t know exactly why. [...] That’s usually how it goes: when I think I need to be forceful, in how I’m singing and/or how I’m approaching the arrangement, it turns out I just need to really back off and that’s when the power comes.” Since Alive People, Garbus released a debut album with her Earth Flower trio alongside Philippe Melanson and Sam Gendel. Her band has scheduled a performance on May 6 at Cassette in Queens, New York, supported by Dear Nora.
