The cast of the upcoming Malcolm in the Middle revival has pushed back against early critics who described the show's central family as dysfunctional. They're mean, loud and aggressive – but they're highly functioning."

Bryan Cranston, portraying the affable Hal, credited creator Linwood Boomer with crafting a family whose arguments stem from deep affection. "Everyone knows if push comes to shove, you'd support your family, but there's no other people that can make you madder or you could argue or yell with more than your family members," Cranston explained. He also noted Lois's dual role as a strict disciplinarian and devoted protector, capturing the essence of real family bonds.

Frankie Muniz, reprising Malcolm, echoed this view, sharing fan anecdotes that underscore the show's relatability. "To this day fans ... approach him to tell him 'Your mum was my mum.
